All About Dentures

Affordable Quality Dentures

Dentures, or false teeth, have been a part of dental care as early as 700 B.C., when ancient civilizations used multi-ringed forms made from gold to replace missing teeth. Empty rings were designed to fit the wearer’s teeth still in place, while the other rings were filled with the tooth of another person or animal and held in place with small pins.

Today, dentures are known as a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues, often made from porcelain or plastic and carefully designed to closely replicate the wearer’s natural teeth and maxillofacial structure. There are two types of dentures available: full/complete and partial dentures. You may work with your dentist in Abingdon to determine the most affordable quality dentures to suit your needs and lifestyle.

Full/Complete Dentures

Full or complete dentures are available in two types: conventional and immediate.

Conventional dentures are made after the removal of the natural teeth and after the gum tissue has healed. These dentures are typically ready for placement within two or three months after tooth extraction. The main advantage of conventional dentures is that they’re designed around the shape and state of the wearer’s mouth following the extraction of the teeth.

Immediate dentures are made before the natural teeth have been removed. They’re designed to be placed in the mouth immediately after extraction of the teeth, which means the wearer experiences no time without teeth, even while the mouth is healing. Since gums and bones often shrink during the healing process, patients must visit their dental care professional for adjustments and/or until conventional dentures are made. In most cases, immediate dentures are a temporary solution during the healing process and the wearer understands that they will need to be fitted for conventional dentures to avoid constant adjustments.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures replace only a certain number of missing teeth. They are removable and usually consist of replacement teeth attached to a plastic, pink-colored base that is connected by metal framework to hold the denture in place. Partial dentures are typically used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw.

A fixed bridge is one kind of partial denture. This type of permanent partial denture fills the gap created by missing teeth and is cemented into place, keeping the other teeth from changing position.

Another type of denture, called a precision partial denture, is removable. This partial denture attaches to the adjacent crowns and creates a more natural-looking tooth replacement.

Your dentist in Abingdon can help you determine which type of affordable quality dentures or partial dentures is the best fit for you.
