Functional Foods for Healthy Teeth

dca-blog_foods-help-brush-teeth

Regular brushing and flossing are key dental care habits that help to keep teeth healthy by flushing out sugars and food particles that team up with bacteria to form plaque. Plaque buildup is an early sign of poor dental health. Too much plaque can lead to erosion of the tooth enamel, cavities, and be a catalyst in the development of gum disease. Sometimes, brushing and flossing alone just aren’t enough in your dental care routine. You can double your efforts with the right food choices. A growing body of research is finding that certain foods help to promote strong, healthy teeth and gums.

The term “functional foods” has opened up to include a function in dental care—helping to give you a brighter, whiter, healthier smile. Adding these four foods and beverages to your diet can help make your visits to your dentist in Abingdon more affordable, since healthy teeth and gums can save you from expensive dental work.

1. Mineral-Rich Foods –Foods rich in calcium and phosphorous have been shown to reverse the development of cavities because they add mineral deposits to acid-caused lesions on the teeth. Calcium-rich foods, like almonds, cheese, and leafy greens; and foods high in phosphorous, such as meat, eggs, and fish are excellent choices for strengthening tooth enamel.

2. Crunchy Foods – Eating crunchy fruits and vegetables, like apples and carrots, promotes saliva production and keeps bacteria from building up on your teeth.

3. Cheese – A study published in General Dentistry reported that adolescents who ate cheddar cheese had lower acid levels in their mouths compared to those who drank a glass of milk or ate sugar-free yogurt. Cheese is believed to help neutralize plaque acid and also increase saliva production to help wash away harmful bacteria.

4. Tea – Black and green teas contain polyphenols, plant compounds that slow the growth of bacteria associated with cavities and gum disease. According to research performed at the University of Illinois at Chicago, subjects who rinsed their mouths with black tea for one minute, 10 times a day, had less plaque buildup on their teeth than people who rinsed with water. Researchers believe that the tea inhibited the bacteria’s ability to clump together, limiting the development of plaque and acids. Additionally, in a 2010 study, black tea was found to be effective against bad breath, because the polyphenols suppress the production of smelly compounds in the mouth.
